Newsletter

The storm before the calm, or something

Heey all,

As I write this, fierce and angry rain is bringing chaos upon my window. I kinda like it to be honest. Wouldn't wanna be outside though for sure. Now you might be wondering: "how is that in any way relevant to Cover, and why is it in a newsletter???". Well, no one proofreads this, so I can literally write anything. I also need to set the bar really low so that future newsletters stand out. Anyway!

Do you like hitting things with a pickaxe, while people are looking at you? Do you like running away from green exploding monsters? Join the Grand Opening of the Minecraft Server!

Do you want to make the Board a tiny bit happier? Do you want to make Cover really happy? Do you want to have an impact? Come to the General Assembly! The pieces are in your mailbox. If they aren't, send me an email and I'll send you a recipe or something.

Not least but last: Campus Fryslân is launching the Voice Technology Masters. If that sounds like something you would enjoy doing after your bachelors, join their introduction lecture!

That's about it for now! Given the amount of cool stuff we are organising, I'm probably forgetting something, but that's alright. You'll probably see it in our announcements group chat!

Toedeloe,

Leo

P.S.: We had beans, now we got socks.

Nice to know

1st DataDump Experiment!: Are masks doing wonders for our looks, besides helping to battle COVID-19? This is what we want to uncover in our first experiment, and we need your help to set it up! Make a picture of yourself, preferably on a white background and with adequate lighting. Only include your head in the picture, and try to keep a neutral expression. Make a second picture in the same way, but now with a standard blue surgical mask on. Send the pictures to +351 913 989 441, and include your age and gender. The data gathered in the experiment will be anonymised, and no statements will be made about individual attractiveness ratings.

Interested in Voice Technology?: On Tuesday 6 April 2021 Campus Fryslân is hosting an online event about Voice Technology together with study associations Cover and Twist. Dr. Matt Coler will open the event with an overview of the MSc. Voice Technology programme. The headline speaker, Daan van Esch (Google) will then give a talk entitled “Building Language Technology for Everyone”.

Online Master’s Week: Online open days are the perfect opportunity to find out more about the University of Groningen's Master’s programmes, our academic community, and life as a UG student. Register now for the Online Master's Week from 22 to 26 March 2021. If you are unable to follow a particular presentation live during the event, don't panic. We will record as many presentations as possible and make them available via this site for two weeks after the Online Master's Week has ended.

This is Cover's weekly newsletter. If you want to contribute to the newsletter send your ideas!
