Happy New Year! 🎆

Welcome back!

I hope you had an ultimately relaxing winter break! We have started up the new year with some great activities, beginning with the crazy Crazy 31 ½ Social. Not only that, we have also gotten a great training from YER on contract and salary negotiation and the Laser Tag with DLCee was a big success. Now that everything has started up again, we can go into the upcoming exam period with fresh motivation 💪.

Are you mentally still on holiday? Don't worry, StudCee has heaps of study support activities organised to help you prepare. There will be a lot of Study Support Lectures this block, some of which organised in collaboration with our wonderful Fully Connected Graph. Additionally, on Monday, StudCee will host a Cafe Study Session at TOET to help you find your motivation again. There are limited spots to join and enjoy the free coffee and tea and a tasting of cakes while studying together.

Are you interested in finding out how the staff is doing this time around? Do you not yet have any plans for breakfast on Tuesday and would appreciate some coffee and interesting conversation? Join us for the Student and Staff Coffee Morning in the Cover room.

Finally, what better to round out a long week with, than some comedy. The Improv Comedy group Stranger Things Have Happened, are coming to us with their show, in collaboration with ChatGPT. Laughs and engagement guaranteed!

Here's to a week so fantastic that your code compiles on the first try every time 🤞

Auf Wiedersehen, Jellybean!

We want you to be in a committee!

⚠️ Here is a cool thingy for our new members: Ever heard of a committee? A committee is a group of friends that work towards a common goal. You can learn about all sorts of topics such as budgeting, planning, sponsoring, and much more! See the website for a complete overview of committees that are looking for members!

Do you enjoy doing research? Doing experiments and testing hypothesises? DataDump is the committee for you. Every year DataDump sets out to research a particular question that we would all like to know the answer to and create a poster from their findings. Last year they set out to find out if the consumption of alcohol had an effect on people’s programming skills. Are you curious what they found? You can find the poster with the results in the Cover Room. If you would like to be part of this year’s ground breaking research, join DataDump now!

IntroCee is renewing! IntroCee is the committee in charge of organising the Introduction Week. The IntroWeek is the first week of uni that is filled with events for the first years for them to discover the university, Cover and to facilitate meeting new people. The main events during the week are the introductory barbecue and of course the IntroCamp: the weekend of fun and games! If you enjoyed your IntroCamp in your year and want to share that experience with the future first years, you can do so through IntroCee! Even if you didn't attend the IntroCamp, IntroCee is a great committee to make an unforgettable event for the first years!

Are you interested in joining a committee? Don't hesitate to contact Luca, our Commissioner of Internal Affairs!

Develop an app for the UG Lustrum

For the Lustrum of the University of Groningen in May 2024 the organising team would like to develop a simple yet functional application. They believe this would be a great opportunity to use the talent that we have within the student population of the UG to develop the app. The university saves money on development costs while also giving students with talent a podium. Afterall, having developed an app for the university would be a great thing to put on the CV. As the app is very basic it should not take too much time, it is a paid assignment though. An idea of some of the things that they would like to put in the app is:

  • The program (no search functionality needed).

  • A map with aspects of the program, including companies where you can get something for free (possibly integration with a map that already exists on the RUG site).

You can indicate your interest in this form.

The Mpemba Effect

This effect describes the counter-intuitive observation that sometimes a hot liquid can freeze faster than the same liquid in a colder state. And this despite the conditions being the same otherwise. While this effect is not uniformly accepted as a proven scientific phenomenon, it has fascinated observant scientists as early as Aristotle.
